چکیده

Physically based simulation is an indispensable component of many interactive virtual environments. The main challenge of virtual reality applications is the realtime requirement. Advanced simulation methods as, e.g., the finite elements method (FEM) require significant computational power. However, the performance increases due to higher clock speed are tapering off. Instead, the compute power is increased by replicating processing units, making parallel computing a necessity for all performance demanding applications. In this paper we analyze the runtime and scalability of a dynamic FEM simulation on dualcore and quadcore architectures. Methods for both small and large deformation simulation are tested and parallelized using OpenMP. The algorithms significantly profit from the multicore architectures, with minimal changes to the serial code.

Interactive Physically-based Simulation of Virtual Objects Torsion

In the fields of virtual reality, physically-based simulation focuses on reproducing the motion and properties of real objects in virtual environments. Until now, various physically-based models of mechanical phenomena have been proposed in the literature, simulating several physical properties such as rigid, fluid or deformable behaviors of the multiple real-life objects. In this master thesis...

An Interactive Parallel Multigrid FEM Simulator

Physically based modeling of deformable objects such as cloth or human tissue has grown to be very important for virtual simulations. However, interactive simulation of these nonlinear deformable objects require high computational power in order to achieve the level of detail and realism required by typical applications. In this paper we introduce a high performance interactive simulation syste...

Real-Time Interaction Techniques for Meshless Deformation Based on Shape Matching

Meshless deformation based on shape matching is a new technique for simulating deformable objects which handles point-based objects and does not need connectivity information. The technique has been first presented in 2005 and is of interest to all fields which require fast, stable simulations which do not need to be physically correct. In particular the technique seems very suitable for use in...

I-48: Ultrasound Deformable Model for Virtual Surgery Simulation of Oocyte Retrieval in Infertility Programs

Background The use of a medical simulator should enhance the goals of minimally invasive surgery: patient safety, cosmesis, shortening the length of hospital admissions, and reducing cost. Using an innovative approach to the handling of ultrasound images in virtual reality simulation, this article describes a process that employs a hybrid model of deformable models that can be applied in the te...
